Rainbow Brites at Zara Home

Rainbow Brites

Zara Home launched its U.S. website earlier this month and it looks promising. While there were a ton of options (in fact it seemed almost impossible to see everything based in part on the fact the website organization could use some reorganization). My favorites on a first review were the items that embraced all the colors of the spectrum. My favorite is probably the throw.

Sweet 16

So I have been obsessed with this photo since I saw it some time ago.

Cute Rooms For Young Girls
Via Shelterness

Why you ask?  The large pink Abraham Lincoln print.  I grew up going to Disneyland and watching Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln and even have had the chance to visit Ford's Theater a few years ago.  Anyway I think most people can agree Abe Lincoln was a cool guy and I thought a pink Abraham Lincoln would be a welcome addition to my home.

But then I couldn't find it.  I pride myself on being able to locate items I want to purchase - I will waste spend a whole night searching for some insignificant item that has caught my eye (e.g., unicorn cocktail picks). Sure I found other portraits and even some in pink but none were quite right.  Then the other day I was perusing Pinterest and saw an Abe Lincoln print that I thought I could love just as much: Neapolitan Abe.

It was still classic Abe (no zombie references) and pink.  But the added bonus was the ice-cream reference.  I'm sure we can add some other meaning to it as well - he's chocolate, vanilla and strawberry in the middle - but I'm not that deep when it comes to these things - I just know what I like and I liked this.

When I found the seller on Etsy I discovered - as though this couldn't get any better - that there was another Abe Lincoln print - again likely imbued with some social commentary - but again I just liked it: Rainbow Abe.

Unfortunately Neapolitan Abe was not listed and there was only a small Rainbow Abe - I just contacted the seller and he relisted and now they are coming home to live with me!!

I have been limiting my art purchases lately as I have tons of art that isn't even hung up right now so it seems silly to get more but I was able to justify these because I had been looking for something for so long.

Favorite Dog Beds

The day I adopted my dog in 2007 I bought a neutral beige dog bed with a tiny white flower pattern on it at the local big box pet store. Since then we have been through so many dog beds and, through trial and error, I have identified a few important criteria for dog beds.

First, the covers must be able to be washed.  This seems kind of obvious and we've never bought a dog bed that didn't start out that way but when someone was a puppy he kept eating through dog beds and eventually they were so sewed up that the covers could no longer be removed.

Second, the covers need to be replaceable.  This way if the dog eats the cover, you spill paint on it or you change your mind you can get a new cover without forking over the price for a whole new bed.  We had a bed for a number of years and while the insides were still fine the cover was wearing out and the last time I washed it the zipper broke.  Sheesh.  So now we go with companies that sell covers separately.

Third, they have to have fun, stylish patterns.  While I tended to go with neutral colors when I first got the dog they were super boring.   But it was either that or have some obnoxious pattern or color that didn't match anything else.

The first company that meets my criteria is Molly Mutt.  They have a number of dog bed duvet options and add a few more every few months.  The fun thing about this company is that you don't buy a bed but a "stuff sack" which you can fill with your old clothes or old dog bed stuffing.  If you use old clothes you can wash the inside of the bed too.  I have an extra cover so when one is in the laundry we can put a fresh one on.

The other company I like is Jax and Bones.  There beds are bit pricier but you can order new covers and even customize any of the beds with any of the fabrics on the website.  They have different styles, sizes, fabric options, and patterns which you can get in one of the premade options or have one customized to your liking.

Halloween Garlands

Halloween Garlands

I've become quite accustomed to having garlands or bunting up year round as there is a perfect spot in my apartment to hang such things.  I usually change it out a few times a year and definitely for different holidays.  These are a few of my favorite Halloween garlands.  Most are available to purchase or can be made at home with just a few supplies. My favorite might be the creepy doll head one.

Sentimental

Now that the delivery date is set for the new couch and the old couches are all set to be picked up by a charity I am starting to regret my decision.  Not about the new couch but about letting the old ones go.

I know that is super silly but every time I look over and see Chopper laying down next to the couch I get a little sad.  Technically Chopper is not supposed to get on the couch but over the last few months he's been really sneaky about it and he always manages to put himself in a cute position and I just have to snap a picture.

So in tribute to the green couch (and Chopper's cuteness) here are some of my favorites.

Caught tan-pawed!

Getting some sun.

He rides inside.

He was already laying like that I just added the empty wine bottle.

I found him like this.

I found him like this too.

And if he gets on the new couch I can use these pictures on the ad putting him up for adoption.

New Couch!!!

I finally bit the bullet and bought the couch.  I had said I would get it by the end of the summer but I only half believed that - then ZGallerie had a sale over Labor Day weekend and with only 30 minutes left to spare (and after measuring the door, the old couches and figuring out the diagonal height of the new couch using a formula that required square roots no less) I bought it.

Royce Sofa from ZGallerie
Now to just get rid of my comfy green couch and love seat.  If those couches had been uncomfortable or in bad shape I would have done this a long time ago but I got a good eight years out of them and now I will try and find them a new home.

I am uncertain how the dog will react to this news although technically he is not supposed to be on the couch I have been letting that rule slip in recent months if it means he will settle down and not beg for treats all night. I pretend I don't see him.

Go for the Gold!

With the Olympics starting on Friday our thoughts all turn to our childhood dreams of winning an Olympic gold medal.  I never pinned down what I would win a medal in but it didn't stop me from wishing.  With the hopes of that dream shattered at this point (unless they added arguing and drafting snarky letters as categories this year) I will choose to surround myself with some other gold accessories in honor of the games.

I think the skull bracelet and the scary pointy bracelet actually look really nice together and I found that I can actually type with the skull bracelet on (which is usually not the case).

Semantically Empty Placeholders

That is the correct name for words like "um" and "uh."  You know those placeholders that we use in every day conversation when we don't know what to say.  I learned this yesterday while reading through a 20 page report at work (my brain was umming by the end).  Anyway I found some items that captured those semantically empty placeholders that I thought I would share.

The Midas Touch

So I was poking around on one my favorite blogs, Paperfashion, and saw the image below of a gold vase from DWR which I thought was right up my alley.  So I clicked on the link and lo and behold the small carafe (or vase which is what it will likely be used for in my home) is on sale for $15.00 (regular $60.00).  I ordered two and sent one to my sister!   Yeah!

I've become ever so slightly obsessed with glassware with gold accents recently so this was of course a lovely surprise for a Monday afternoon.

Favorite Finds Friday

Good morning! Today I thought I would leave you with some of my favorite finds from around the web - some stores, some images - whatever I found inspiring this week.

Head over to the Pink Pagoda for some fun elephant glicees.  Or monkeys.  They have a coupon code for 20% (JulySale20) so you will even save a little money.  I don't know why I seem to be drawn to elephants lately.  Probably have ridden Dumbo too many times at Disneyland.  The best part is you can get the print below with the elephant facing two directions so you can have a pair of them on either side of a couch or bookshelf or whatever.  Brilliant!

These brass urchins from Furbish which you can either use as a coffee table accessory or hang on the wall.  This shop also has some awesome trays that I wouldn't mind having to display my baubles and trinkets.

I also love a freebie - go here for an awesome neon wrapping paper download.  And if you want some neon tape or string check this out for some sources.

And look what's back in stock over at Leif - the glitter tea spoons!  I love mine (and the pink ones I snagged too).

Check out Aunt Peaches' blog - it is a mix of crafting and general amazingness.  I wish she was my next door neighbor though I think we would get in a lot of trouble.

And if you are in the market for a clutch I would check out k.slademade.  The prices are pretty reasonable and they look gorgeous.  I recently ordered the gold leather clutch and can't wait for it to arrive.  The mint was my second favorite though.

All that Glitters is Gold (and a little bit old)

Last weekend I went apartment hunting with a friend in a small town in Southern California and we came across a lovely antique galleria in an old-fashioned downtown.  The prices were so much better than the big name flea markets in LA and it was air-conditioned.

I found this vintage 22 karat gold-plated and porcelain tea set (which I think goes nicely with my new bodum french press).  I actually left it there and went back two hours later and bought it - it was calling my name.  My sister recently bought me some tea at Alice's Tea Cup when she was visiting New York City so I think I will have brew some in my new lovely tea pot!

I also came across some shiny gold flatware.  It's not as high end as the tea set (and I found out later it is missing one fork but has a lot of extra spoons) but the price was so good (my three girlfriends all agreed on this point) that I couldn't leave it there.

And on the trip back to get the tea set we also went upstairs and I found a cane barrel chair (buried under a pile of the creepiest dolls I had ever seen).  Also an excellent price.  I'd like to reupholster the seat and paint it in white lacquer after I pick it up.  See the chair was not going to fit in the car with four lovely girls and all our other loot.  So we are planning at trip back this weekend to pick it up.

The blue leather seat isn't actually that bad but I would prefer a flowery print and some solid piping - turns out one of my friends has an  upholstery guy - so that will come in handy when the time comes.

We will have to see if any new treasures await us this Sunday.  One friend bought a boat load of depression glass and the other has her eye on a reversible faux leather/faux tiger fur jacket.

Neon in the Home

Neon Home

I love a little bright here and there my home.  I fell in love with the letters from Twisted Twig a few months ago.  I had a custom LOVE set made for my own home in gold and pink and they are displayed on my bookshelves at home.  The cushion covers are great together or just one to brighten up a space (at $48 each you might have to pick one or two).  The salad servers from Leif are part of a larger collection that includes teaspoons, jam spreaders, cake knives, tart servers and sugar tongs.  I have a few different pieces and they are so far really good quality and have held up really well (the glitter spoons are adorable but usually set out really quickly).  And while I may not be able to have a neon sign put in any time soon I found a few brightly colored lights.  And if you really aren't sure if you will like something this bright the tea towel is fairly tame (and it's from France).

Living Room Makeover

Living Room

I have been planning my living room for a few years now. I've been buying pieces here and there and now all I have left to buy is the couch and the chair. The only problem is I keep changing my mind about the couch - I know I want a grey couch but the actual choice keeps changing. But I think I need to make a decision by the end of the summer or I may never bite the bullet.

Ikea Vika Fintorp Table Legs

I will never ever remember the appropriate name for anything at Ikea.  I only remember what the items I want look like which then means I am having a conversation with someone in a yellow shirt who is looking at me like I am crazy (how do they not know what I'm talking about they work there?).

Anyway - at some point last year I saw this picture over at Better Homes and Gardens web page of the Vika Fintorp Table Legs:

And I decided right then and there that I wanted those desk legs to create a long desk the length of a wall in living space.  Then I discovered that those legs are no longer sold at Ikea.  Argh.  I went on a desperate Internet search to see if I could track them down via Craig's List or some other entity - no such luck - and apparently I was not the only person looking for these legs.

Fast forward to last Saturday.  I went to Ikea to help a friend pick out a dresser and to find some sort of storage solution for craft supplies.  Before we loaded up in the self-serve area we headed to the "as-is" department.  I have never had any luck there.  My friend scored some awesome red chairs there once that were both new and discontinued at the same time (?) as well as some other not as exciting items.  I was not prepared for what I saw when we came around the corner - the silver Vika Fintorp Legs on the stainless steel tabletop.  The tabletop appeared as though someone had taken a hammer to it.  Multiple times.  The legs were in near perfect condition however.  While my friend went to get a cart I refused to move from the table.

I am an expert at getting Ikea boxes into my SUV but this was put together.  We were fairly certain that this would not fit in the car assembled but decided we could take the legs off and have it loaded in a spiffy.  This is where the fun begins.  The last time we were at Ikea they had handy dandy tools mounted on strings on the wall.  I always wondered what for but now I knew.  But (of course) they had been removed (I can only assume some child poked it's eye out).  We then asked at Customer Service for a screwdriver.  What they gave us was barely a screwdriver but still we were hopeful - that is until we realized almost all the screws were stripped.  Eighteen stripped screws and the worst screwdriver ever.  We abandoned the plan and hoped it would fit in the car.

It didn't.

It looks like it will fit - but it wouldn't.

What followed was some mild cursing, a slow speed drive to the other side of the parking lot (with the back of the car open and my friend holding the table) to a Target to purchase an assortment of screwdrivers and 60 minutes of heavy duty unscrewing.  In the end the legs came off and the table and all other purchases made it home.

Now I just need to figure out what kind of table top I want but in the mean time the legs will be safely stored away (the table top is likely headed for a dumpster).

Domino Coming Back . . . .Well Sort Of!

I am not sure how I did not know about this sooner as it seems to have been announced in early February on Domino's Facebook and twitter accounts.  It is a special edition entitled Domino Quick Fixes and according to a press release from Condé Nast it "will be full of Domino’s best home decorating stories, focusing on easy, often inexpensive changes that make a big difference – from quick spruce-ups of dowdy furniture to more involved DIY projects like painting stairs or reorganizing a home office."  This edition hits newsstands April 17 and will be available through July 16, 2012 at a cost of $10.99.  There are also plans for a second special edition in the fall.

I can't wait and will be marking it on my calendar right now!

The Sunshine State

Much to my dismay California is not the Sunshine State - that nickname belongs to Florida where I spent almost the last two weeks eating seafood (including stone crab at Joe's Stone Crab),  sampling too much key lime pie, enjoying warm weather and getting my fix of Florida amusement parks. (There was also some interesting misadventures on a mini road trip between Miami and Orlando that involved New York style Chinese food, giant birds, a Publix grocery store and too little sleep which may not be suitable for sharing at this time.)  I have returned to temperatures in the 40s and 50s which is a bit unusual for a few days before Spring here in southern California and I'm not dealing well with it.

In an effort to extend my vacation (and remember the warm weather) a tad longer I went trolling for a few reminders of my most recent vacation.

I've been a fan of Bird Ave and their skyline prints for some time now.  I was first drawn to the skyline print of my beloved San Francisco but they have some Florida cities that are also endearing as well and would be a nice reminder of the last few weeks.

Bird Ave Miami Print (Image via Bird Ave)
I would love to have one of these pinned on a bulletin board with some fun photo reminders and silly souvenirs from the trip - a sort of mini art installation that I could change out until I go on my next vacation.
While I am not ready to fully exclaim my love for Florida yet (I was there in September as well and the humidity indirectly resulted in me almost losing a toe) I still find this necklace from Truche endearing. (Personally I would go for this one.)

While I am clearly a California girl I can appreciate the rest of the country (in small doses) now and then for vacationing and shopping and other amusements and I do hope to get back to Florida again soon.

Pillow Talk

I am obsessed with pillows or more specifically cushion covers.  I am planning to finally bite the bullet this year and get a new couch and am 98% certain I am going for gray.  To spruce up the neutral color I am planning on going crazy bright with cushion covers and maybe even changing them out once in awhile.  To that end I have spent countless hours trolling through Etsy looking for covers.  Just the other day I came upon Festive Home Decor.  There are lots of options and all the current trends - ikat, chevron and suzani prints - and the best part is they are in BRIGHT colors too.

Given the gray couch and my penchant for all thinks pink I am thinking about getting  a pair of the sherbert collection suzani cushion covers and the pink chevron/ikat combo covers pictured below.

Image via Festive Home Decor

The best part is that the prices are fairly reasonable.  For about $28 you can get two 16 inch covers and $35 for two 20 inch covers.  You provide the pillows which cuts down on shipping and handling and makes it easier to get different types and switch out for the seasons (I spotted some fun Christmas inspired cushions in her shop).

Another favorite shop on Etsy is Aqua Door Designs out of Australia.  These are a little pricier but the material is screen printed by hand.  Not surprisingly my favorites are the fluorescent pink designs. I love the rich colors.  One of these cushion covers would be a splurge and I'd have to think about where it would not become a head rest for the dog (who is not allowed on the furniture but is one sneaky guy when it comes to couches).

Then again a whole collection of these cushion covers looks awesome together.  Maybe I could keep them hidden away until someone important came over and there was no chance of red wine getting on them (i.e., my mother).

Flavor Paper

I've never been a fan of the Willy Wonka movies - orange oompa loompas and I think Willy Wonka has crazy eyes.  But there's a scene where the kids are licking wallpaper which I always think of when I think of Flavor Paper.  Flavor Paper is a company based out of Brooklyn that makes hand screened wallpaper and fabrics and digital wallpaper.

Sassy Toile in Electric Raspberry via Flavor Paper
I fell in love with the Sassy Toile when I first saw it - especially in Electric Raspberry and Pearl Gold.  There are birds, bikinis, butterflies, horses and beach balls - something for everyone. You can even customize the colors of the wallpaper.  City Park is another fun toile design that incorporates fire hydrants and pigeons.  If the dog had his own bedroom I think I would wallpaper it in that (hopefully he wouldn't try and pee on it though). I am also liking Sharp Descent. I think these would work great for an accent wall in a room (it might be a little overwhelming on all four walls) especially the ones that seem more traditional at first glance and then are quite funky when you get up close.

Design Darling

Lifestyle blogger Mackenzie Horan just launched a new online boutique Design Darling on March 1.  Design Darling has a carefully curated collection of art, accessories, and decorative items.  The best part is that there is a fairly nice selection of items for $20 and under.

Some of my favorite under $20 items are the desk accessories.  I love the What We Love pencils.  There are also a number of pretty matches that are classier than the ones you picked up on your last trip to Vegas.

What We Love Pencils

Bee Matches for $7.00 per box

If your budget is a little bigger go for some of the baubles or a cute pillow.  I like the Coral Turquoise studs ($32) and the pink Greek Key pillow cover in pink ($52).

I am currently deciding what Design Darling goodies are going to be coming home to stay with me (it's a toss up between the gold lacquer tray and the monogrammed business card holder right now).   The shop is definitely worth checking out the next time you need a present or a pick me up for yourself.
